Make Hay While the Sun Shines!
By Richard Holmes
(OK the sun may not have shone!)
The vets had their first fixture of the season, away at Ettington. 18 had managed to clean off their boots for the trip but welly boots felt more appropriate as the pitch looked more like a hay field, having not seen a mower for the Summer months. The rain made it slippery too to give us plenty to think about.
Playing downhill in the first half Bloxham soaked up some early attacks but defended well with Ettington failing to hit the target. As the match progressed Bloxham starting finding some space up front and opened up Ettington's back 4 and it wasn't long before one of the attacks resulted in Bloxham taking the lead. The first half continued in the same fashion with the defence putting in a solid performance to restrict the Ettington efforts, whilst counter attacks gave Bloxham some joy. By half time is was 0-3.
Changes at half time meant all 18 were involved and Ettington started the half the better, camping in the Bloxham box. After 5 minutes of defending it was noted that Bloxham only had 10 players on which changed things back in Bloxham's favour! Neil made a point blank save, tipping an effort over the bar and Ettington did find the net in the second half but it was largely a half that Bloxham controlled, adding a further 4 goals to take home their first victory of the season.
